With more than 30 years of research and working with families with children with autism spectrum disorder, I can confirm that the impact of this syndrome on children's physical and psychological development is very profound and complex.
Autism spectrum, hyperactivity - delayed speech is not just a problem of social communication or repetitive behavior as people often think. It also affects almost every aspect of a child's life - from language ability, emotions, cognition, to physical health.
Many children with ASD, ADHD encounter accompanying problems such as sleep disorders, digestive disorders, increased risk of obesity, epilepsy or symptoms of anxiety and depression. These can disrupt the child's normal physical and mental development, leading to the child's inability to integrate into the learning environment or community.
Dr. Klin: Thank you for asking a very important question. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1 in 100 children worldwide are diagnosed with ASD, ADHD. A recent meta-analysis found that the prevalence of ASD, ADHD worldwide is approximately 0.77%, with a prevalence of 1.14% in boys. The prevalence of children under 8 years of age diagnosed with ASD is 1 in 31 (3.2%).
In the Philippines, according to statistics from the Department of Health, 1 in 100 children born is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Reporter: Are there any hidden risks that parents often overlook when their children have autism? In addition to the obvious symptoms such as slow speech, poor communication, and hyperactivity, can you point out some potentially dangerous signs that parents should pay special attention to?
Dr. Klin: In addition to the symptoms that people often know such as slow speech, poor communication, or hyperactivity, there are also some hidden but extremely important signs that parents need to pay special attention to:
Sleep disorders: Many children have difficulty sleeping, wake up in the middle of the night, or sleep very little, which parents often think is due to "being used to the schedule" or "the child has a strong personality". However, prolonged lack of sleep seriously affects the child's brain and psychological development.
Digestive disorders: Constipation, persistent diarrhea, or abdominal pain are common but often overlooked conditions in children with autism. The digestive system and the nervous system are closely linked. When the digestive system is unstable, the child's mood and behavior are also affected.

Dr. Klin: As the brain matures, the ability to learn and adapt gradually decreases. Treatment for older children is often prolonged, less effective, and reduces the opportunity for community integration and normal learning. ASD and ADHD directly affect children's ability to interact and communicate socially. If not detected and treated early, it can lead to some serious challenges.

Many parents still mistakenly think that their children's hyperactivity, slow speech or difficulty controlling emotions are normal in young children, not knowing that these could be early signs of autism spectrum disorder. I have witnessed too many families discovering their children's abnormal manifestations but because of subjectivity, hesitancy to intervene in time, accidentally missing the "golden time" to help children develop their brains.
If not intervened early, children will face countless difficulties in communication, learning, integration ability and even lose the opportunity to be independent in the future and become a burden to their parents.
I have a sincere advice for parents: "Don't wait until your child loses the ability to speak or communication skills before you start worrying — intervene early while you still can, don't wait until it's too late!"
Reporter: Doctor, do you have any advice for parents who are still worried and do not know where and how to start intervening for their children?
Dr. Klin: Absolutely! Because family is an important factor in helping children develop. Early detection and intervention for children will help them adapt and integrate into society like normal people. The most suitable age to detect and intervene for children with ASD and ADHD is from 18 months to 8 years old. This is called the "golden period" for intervention because the child's brain is still developing and has the ability to adapt and learn very well with appropriate treatment methods.

Dr. Klin: The brain is developing rapidly: This is the stage of the fastest development of a child's cognition, language and social skills. Signs of autism have begun to appear more clearly, although they may be very mild, but parents and doctors can recognize them through manifestations of slow speech, poor eye contact, not responding to names...
