We, the reporters at the DOH, were very fortunate to meet and interview Dr. Jaime A. Galvez Tan about cancer while he was teaching at the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital.
Reporter:
Doctor, the cancer rate in the Philippines remains high, and many people are diagnosed only when the disease is already in its late stages. In your opinion, what is the main reason for this situation?
Dr. Jaime A. Galvez Tan:
Yes, this is indeed a concerning reality. The main reasons are the lack of early screening, limited knowledge about early symptoms, and the high cost of treatment, which causes many people to delay seeking medical care.
In addition, modern lifestyles — lack of physical activity, air pollution, high-fat diets, and prolonged stress — also weaken the immune system, creating conditions for abnormal cells to develop.
